- Trauma is costly. The economic burden of trauma is more than $585 billion annually.
- It kills young people. Trauma is the #1 cause of death for Americans between 1 and 46 years old.
- Because trauma is a disease affecting all ages of people, the impact on life years lost is equal to the life years lost from cancer, heart disease and HIV combined. (Life Years Lost: A measure to account for the age at which deaths occur, giving greater weight to deaths occurring at younger ages and lower weight to deaths occurring at older ages.)
- Trauma is lethal. Each year, more than 192,000 people lose their lives to trauma.
